Clearances

When a business is sold with unpaid sales and use taxes, the buyer is required to withhold those taxes, interest and penalties from the purchase price. A buyer that does not is jointly and severally liable for them; Maine Revenue Services points buyers to a tax clearance letter the seller requests from its Compliance Division.
